Users Discontinuing Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters
Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such treatments should be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
