Zohran Mamdani Vows a 'Fresh Chapter' for NYC in Maiden Speech
On his initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” New York City, declaring “a different age” and an ambitious start to his tenure.
A Groundbreaking Figure
The young figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
“A moment like this is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.
Defying advice to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”
Governing with Socialist Convictions
Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for concern of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.
The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.
A Costly Blueprint
Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

- Fare-free public buses
- A rent freeze for about 1 million households

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
